Wax Rose Renaissance festival:Wax Rose by ~afraudandafake
Handing over $10
And selecting a pale, long-stemmed beauty
For dipping
Blue with black stem
Watching, thinking of
Esther Greenwood
Being photographed
With a red rose
And crying.
It rests on my favorite bookshelf
And reminds me how I feel--
Once beautiful, but now rotting
Beneath a casement of falseness
Ready to split in two
If over-handled.

River of Orchids I am grateful to you for the introductionRiver of Orchids by ~afraudandafake
I imagine you singing to me
In your low, clear voice
I've been dreaming of scars and our wedding,
Rose petals and blood.

Upon Arriving in Newark We swooped in over a riverUpon Arriving in Newark by ~afraudandafake
I don't know what river--
It was brown and hemmed by smokestacks.
24,000 comedy routines on Jersey
Flashed before my eyes
And I believed them.
The "Welcome to Newark--America's
RENAISSANCE city!" sign
Was juxtaposed with a grimed and graffitied stone overpass
The irony was not subtle.
Sinking into the deep blue seats of the taxi
Bridge sides high enough to prevent seeing
That River
The blown-out factory windows leered at me
And I glimpsed how people become desperate.
